National Grammar Day is Here!
National Grammar
Day is commemorated by language teachers, students and other professionals
throughout the United States on March 4, which announced the celebration was
Martha Brockenbrough in 2008. Brockenbrough is the founder of the Society for
the Promotion of Good Grammar, or SPOGG (Society for the Promotion of Good
Grammar). SPOGG operates a website where Brockenbrough writes about different
language issues. Brockenbrough also wrote a grammar and grammar advice book
"Things That Make Us [Sic.]". There is also Mignon Fogarty organizing
this year's National Grammar Day celebration. He wrote the book "Grammar
Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing." And Fogarty appeared on
NBC's "Today" TV program on Wednesday. He discusses new additions to
English.
The American Dialect Society chooses a new word or has been used every year in a new way. The choice for the word 2015 is "THEY," used as a neutral gender single person pronoun.
